Electric vehicles are rolling onto roads across India, factories are looking for ways to cut energy waste, and defence forces are constantly facing high-risk tasks that put lives on the line. Across all these sectors, technology is struggling to keep up. Traditional motors are bulky, inefficient, and energy-hungry, while robotics for critical defence operations remain limited and often rely on imported solutions.
To solve this, Vignesh M., Vibhakar Senthil, and Abbhi Vignesh K. founded Torus Robotics in Chennai with a mission that’s as bold as it sounds: make electric motors smarter, industrial systems cleaner, and defense operations safer. All powered by homegrown innovation.
At the heart of their work are axial flux motors. Unlike traditional motors, these are compact, lightweight, and over 96% efficient in real world use. Pair them with Torus’ intelligent motor controllers, and you get up to 60% less energy consumption. Because of this, EVs go farther on a single charge, factories cut costs and emissions, and industrial systems like HVAC get a much-needed upgrade. And these motors are built to last. They’re sealed against dust, mud and water, and perform reliably even in harsh conditions that would challenge conventional technology.
On the defense side, Torus is turning heads with fully electric Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). Some are equipped with 6-DOF robotic arms that can detect, identify, and dispose off dangerous objects safely, taking human soldiers out of harm’s way. They’re also developing heavy-lift logistics UGVs capable of delivering supplies to remote, high-altitude, or rough-terrain locations which ensures that critical operations continue even under challenging conditions.
Torus’ approach is all about creating next gen systems that are efficient, versatile and reliable, solving real problems across multiple sectors. They are India’s first tech startup recognized by Startup India for robotics and powertrain innovation and named Pioneer Defence Innovators by IDEX.
The impact of their technology is quite tangible. EVs with Torus motors run longer, factories operate cleaner, and defence forces can carry out dangerous operations without risking lives. On top of that, Torus is slashing India’s reliance on imported powertrain components, helping build a self-reliant, homegrown tech ecosystem.
At the end of the day, Torus Robotics is shaping a future where technology is smarter, energy is used more efficiently, and humans are safer. Every high-performance motor and clever UGV is proof that innovation, sustainability, and safety can go hand in hand. And that India’s Climate Tech story is only just getting ready to take off.
